Type of firm
Tax advisers for UK employers
Specialist tax work: R&D claims, HMRC enquiries, planning and disputes.
What they do
Specialists who deal with tax rather than accounts: R&D tax relief claims, HMRC enquiries and investigations, employment status and IR35 reviews, and planning for directors and shareholders. Often brought in alongside the regular accountant for a specific job.
What to check before you hire one
Look for CIOT or ATT membership, or a chartered accountancy qualification with a tax specialism. Be wary of anyone whose fee is a percentage of an R&D claim and who promises an outcome before seeing the work.
