Occupational health providers for UK employers

Clinical advice on fitness for work, long-term sickness and adjustments.

What they do

Occupational health sits between your HR process and your employee’s clinician. They carry out pre-employment and fitness for work assessments, see staff on long-term sickness and advise in writing on what adjustments would let someone return. That written advice is what makes a capability or disability decision defensible later, and it is the piece employers most often skip.

What to check before you hire one

Ask whether assessments are carried out by an occupational health physician or a nurse, and whether the service holds SEQOHS accreditation. Check how fast a referral is seen — a six week wait is no use mid-absence — and that the report comes to you with the employee’s consent recorded.
