Frequently asked questions
Who counts as a new entrant for a Skilled Worker visa?
Someone who is under 26 when they apply, is switching from a Student or Graduate visa (or held one in the last 2 years), is working towards a recognised UK professional qualification, registration or chartered status, or is taking a postdoctoral position in certain occupation codes.
What is the new entrant salary threshold?
New entrants must be paid at least £33,400 a year and at least 70% of the going rate for the occupation code, instead of £41,700 and 100%.
How long can I pay the new entrant rate?
The combined time on Skilled Worker, Tier 2 and Graduate visas can’t exceed 4 years when using the new entrant rate. After that, the worker must be paid the standard rate to extend.
Can new entrant rates be used for Health and Care Worker visas?
Yes. For health and care roles the new entrant option has a £25,000 floor and 70% of the going rate, or the national pay scale where one applies.
Do I need to record why I used the new entrant rate?
Yes. State on the certificate of sponsorship that the new entrant rate applies and why, and keep the evidence — such as proof of age, the Student visa or professional training — on the worker’s file.
